The City Council presents a government measure to transform and reactivate the city's maritime sector

Boosting and promoting the blue sectors as a new economic pole for the city. Under this premise, Barcelona City Council has presented the municipal commitment towards the Blue Economy. The new measure, drawn up with the collaboration of Barcelona Activa, aims to turn the sector into one of the economic drivers of the city, a leading area in innovation and creator of wealth and employment.
Beyond the presentation of the measure, an investment of 40.5 million Euros and 52,000 m2 will be allocated to promoting entrepreneurship, employment and training in the Blue Economy. A sector that is very present within the strategic plan of the Barcelona Green Deal and which is included in the promotion of the Barcelona Economic Agenda 2030.
The roadmap counts on the support and participation of key public and private entities for the sector. The new strategy is made up of different boosting projects that promote the sustainable reactivation of the Barcelona coastline. Among others, a Blue Economy hub will be created, which will foster employment and specialised training, but above all, the project for transforming the Olympic Port.
The Blue Economy represents 4.3% of the GDP and 1.4% of the employment in the city. The aquatic field includes economic activities such as transport and maritime logistics, port tasks, fishing, the nautical and sports sector, tourism, naval construction and maintenance or marine renewable energies.
