The Blue Economy encompasses economic activities linked to aquatic fields that are compatible with the preservation of marine ecosystems and that promotes sustainable social and economic development.

Barcelona is committed to boosting the Blue Economy in the city so that it becomes a vector of job creation, economic and social development of the city and the backbone of its coast, fostering activities focused on innovation, sustainability and technology.

Therefore, Barcelona Activa has a new economic plan for the next five years, to recover the ambition and take advantage of the full potential of the city, with the priorities of retaining and training talent, facilitating economic activity and attracting more and better investments.

The new BCN Green Deal agenda, aligned with the 2030 Agenda, sets out priorities and measures to strengthen the city through three key elements: competitiveness, sustainability and equity.

New Olympic Port

The new Olympic Port is a leading project that aims to turn the space into the icon of the Blue Barcelona and as a role model for sustainability. It will be a Blue Economy hub, contributing to innovation, generation of new economic activity and quality employment. In addition, the project includes new spaces for the promotion of leisure sailing and water sports, and the recovery of the public space of contact with the sea, where anyone can enjoy, work, play sports and experience the sea.

Barcelona Maritime Technology Park

This leading project includes several physical spaces in Nova Bocana transformed into a campus for higher education, vocational training, research, technology development, innovation, technology transfer, entrepreneurship promotion and employment in the field of the Blue and Sustainable Economy, as well as specific areas for the development of collaborative projects. This Park, in addition, will contribute to the innovation and positioning of the business fabric of the city.

B-Blue Barcelona Activa entrepreneurship programme

The creation of an entrepreneurship programme aims to develop a leading service and excellence in business creation in the field of the Blue Economy, thus being a hub of attraction for the economy of Barcelona. It is aimed at all those projects that want to promote and support the blue business and entrepreneurial ecosystem of the city. The activities developed will range from support in starting up the company to personal tutorials and specialisation workshops with experts.

This round table will delve into the key factors that make the city an increasingly attractive destination for the global development of the blue economy. The speakers will share the reasons that have led them to establish themselves in Barcelona and will reflect on the opportunities that the city offers for growth, collaboration and impact in this sector.

6 November, Barcelona. Catalan FLAG’s and their impact in promoting SEA triple sustainability for the sea.

Hours: 10:30 - 11:00h Space: TBE Plaza Language: English Description: The Local Fisheries Action Groups (GALP) of Catalonia promote SEA initiatives — Social, Economic and Environmental — that strengthen coastal communities and promote research and innovation within the fishing sector. As territorial catalysts, they connect science, fishing, governance and local knowledge to move towards a resilient, inclusive and heritage-based blue economy.

6 November, Barcelona. Driving the Blue Economy in Barcelona: Measuring Progress & Shaping the Future.

Hours: 11:00 - 11:45h Space: TBE Plaza Language: English Description: This round table will present the city’s renewed commitment to the blue economy through the updating of the Government Measure, which defines strategic priorities for the coming years. The Observatory of the Blue Economy of Barcelona will also be introduced, a key tool to monitor the economic, social and environmental impact of the sector. These initiatives reflect the strategic ambition of the city to become a global benchmark in the field of the blue economy.

6 November, Barcelona. Training Talent for the Ocean Economy of the Future.

Hours: 13:00 - 13:30h Space: TBE Plaza Language: English Description: The blue economy is generating new professional opportunities in areas such as marine biotechnology, underwater robotics, marine renewable energies or sustainable tourism. This round table will explore emerging professional trajectories linked to the oceans, seas and coastal areas, and will discuss how to prepare professionals to respond to the growing demands of a sustainable and constantly evolving sector.

6 November, Barcelona. Blue Jobs Match.

Hours: 13:30 - 16:30h Space: Room 3.14C Language: Catalan Description: Activity aimed at last year students and young graduates of university degrees and master's degrees linked to the blue economy, especially those who are in the process of job search. The aim is to facilitate a first direct contact with companies in the sector that have real talent incorporation needs. The activity will include a brief presentation by the participating companies and a dynamic of professional speed dating, in which participants will have the opportunity to make brief interviews with representatives of selected companies.

4-6 November, Barcelona. Ocean Innovation Hub.

Space: Ocean Innovation Hub Description: The Ocean Innovation Hub is a space dedicated to startups, scaleups and emerging technologies that present innovative solutions in the Blue Economy. In this space, Barcelona City Council, through Barcelona Activa, promotes the presence of 6 startups that have participated in previous editions of the B-Blue entrepreneurship program, offering them their own stand for free. In addition to having an exhibition space, these startups will enjoy several additional advantages during the event.
